Particle, Gas and Combination Filters According to EN Standards
Which respiratory protection filters for half masks and full face masks provide maximum protection in industrial and hazardous substance environments?
Respiratory protection filters approved in accordance with EN 143 and EN 14387 and equipped with an EN 148-1 standard threaded connection can be used with half masks and full face masks featuring the same filter connection. When using a half mask, the weight of the attached respiratory filter must not exceed 300 g.
When using a full face mask, the weight of the attached respiratory filter must not exceed 500 g. For Class 1 full face masks, only the filters specified by the mask manufacturer may be used.
These weight limits are intended to prevent face seal leakage caused by the weight of the filter. If the use of heavier filters is unavoidable, filters can be used with a remote filter system (such as the e-breathe Remote Filter Holder System). In this configuration, the mask is connected to the filter via a breathing hose, while the filter is carried on the user’s waist using a dedicated carrying system.
Which filters for powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) ensure safe breathing air during extended periods of use?
Respiratory protection filters for powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are approved in accordance with EN 12941 and EN 12942 and may only be used with the specific certified PAPR unit with which they have been tested and approved. The filters are specifically matched to the corresponding blower unit and its required airflow rates and are certified as part of a complete respiratory protection system.
For filters approved under EN 12941 and EN 12942, the filter classification may differ if the blower unit provides different airflow rates for different headtop types.
When selecting filters for powered air-purifying respirators, it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding the filter type, number of filters, matched airflow resistance, and other system-specific requirements. Only filters that are approved for use with the respective blower unit may be used.
Particle Filter
Particle filters offer protection against particles and are divided into three classes according to their separation capacity: P1 / P2 / P3. A higher protection class includes a lower one. The filter medium in the particulate filter catches the particles and increases its resistance. As soon as the resistance of the filter becomes too high, the filter will need to be replaced.

Gas filter
Gas filters provide protection against gases and vapours and are divided into three classes according to type and main area of application, depending on their performance. The absorption capacity of each filter class includes those of the lower classes of the same type. The activated carbon in the gas filter absorbs the various gases. As soon as the gas filter is saturated or exhausted, the gas breaks through. The user can detect this by smell and/or taste and the filter must be replaced.

Combination filters are a combination of a gas filter and a particle filter. They therefore offer protection against gases, vapours and particles. They must be replaced as soon as one of the two components is saturated.
